The role of acupuncture in treating inflammation and depression

Acupuncture is known (and been clinically proven) to reduce pain in the body. But did you know that it has also been shown to treat depression? Turns out, all that mental anguish is not just in your head!

Pain can be the result of inflammation in the body, and, according to a recent study from Harvard Medical School, as well other studies in Chinaacupuncture can have powerful anti-inflammatory effects. This is why the most common condition we treat is back pain: it can be caused by misaligned structures, muscle imbalances, and nerve impingements. These conditions in turn promote inflammatory responses of the body in the form of cytokines. Cytokines originate from white blood cells, which are the VIPs of our immune system. By using acupuncture, we can lower the amount and intensity of the cytokines in the body, thereby limiting the amount of pain felt in our patients.

Depression has most commonly been seen as a result of deficiencies in neurotransmitters in the body, such as serotonin. However, some new studies have shown that inflammation can also exacerbate depression and cause depressive symptoms. While the cause is not direct, there is a correlation between those people who are depressed and those who also suffer from inflammation in the body, especially the brain. We already know that a diet low in sugar and high in B vitamins and Omega3 fatty acids has beneficial effects on mood. But in light of this new study, regular acupuncture appears to help with treating depressive symptoms and their intensity, as well. We acupuncturists can help patients manage their symptoms to create and cultivate a more healthy, peaceful mind by using different points on the body known in Chinese Medicine to treat sadness, grief, and anxiety.

Acupuncture should not be used alone to treat depression and anxiety, as these are very complex conditions that require an arsenal of care, practices, and practitioners. But regular acupuncture treatments can be part of a healthy regimen to help manage symptoms, as well as maintain a healthy, balanced mind. At Autonomic Acupuncture, we want to be a support system in your mental wellbeing. Book an appointment today to start on your path to mental wellness
